Neurodevelopmental Therapy
(NDT) Foundation Paediatric Course
South African Neurodevelopmental Therapy Association
This is an internationally recognized postgraduate course in the assessment and treatment of children with cerebral palsy and other neurodevelopmental conditions, presented under the auspices of the South African Neurodevelopmental Therapy Association (SANDTA).
Who is SANDTA?
SANDTA is a group of therapists with a special interest in Neurodevelopmental Therapy
SANDTA was established in 1976 as a way to support and equip therapists working with people living with cerebral palsy (CP) and other neuromotor conditions. Now a registered non-profit organisation, SANDTA has four interactive branches around South Africa.
What is Neurodevelopmental Therapy (NDT)?
Neurodevelopmental therapy (NDT) is based on the lifelong work of Karl and Bertha Bobath. The Bobath concept offers an interdisciplinary, problem-solving approach to the assessment, treatment, and management of any individual with a limited ability to participate in daily life due to an impairment of motor, sensory, perceptual, and cognitive function resulting from a central nervous system disorder such as cerebral palsy (CP).
The Bobath concept continues to evolve based on the evidence emerging through new theories, models, research and information in the neuro and movement sciences. The individual’s abilities and impairments are identified and addressed in relation to participation in functional activities. The NDT concept offers a hands-on, problem-solving approach with interventions involving handling and guidance of movement to optimize function for people living with central nervous system disorders such as cerebral palsy (CP).
Neurodevelopmental Therapy Foundation Paediatric Course
This is a postgraduate course in the assessment and treatment of children with cerebral palsy and other neurodevelopmental conditions presented under the auspices of the South African Neurodevelopmental Therapy Association (SANDTA). It is a modular course and is based on the curriculum suggested by the European Bobath Tutors Association (EBTA) together with input from the Australian Bobath Neurodevelopmental Therapy Association (ABNDTA). It has been modified to meet local conditions. SANDTA courses are recognised internationally.
