Course Objectives:
- Why we need to have more knowledge and evidence based practice physiotherapy for our older population
- How dealing with older population is different than dealing with any other patient either MSK, Neuro or cardio patient
- What are the challenges that we face as physiotherapists when dealing with seniors and older population
- Why outcome measures is critical when dealing with geriatrics
- How we can address falls and best method to prevent it
- Can physios have a role in patients with dementia, delirium and depression
- What is the best evidence that can be used when giving exercises to our older population.

Module 1: Ageing
“ Effects of ageing on different body systems and its relation to physiotherapy”
Module 2: Chronic disease management
Identify common diseases and pathologiesassociated with advanced aging
Approaches used by physiotherapist to manage chronic diseases in older population and motivational interviewing.
Module 3: Pharmacology for older adults
Awareness of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics in the older population, have knowledge about some medication classes of concern, Identify non pharmacological management and health concerns.
Why physiotherapist should know pharmacology, and awareness of pharmacological impacts on continence, falls and pain management.
Module 4: Functional assessment
What are outcome measures and how we can select a good outcome measure
Why we measure health and using different outcome measure in our practice
Module 5: Falls
Risk factors, Screening, assessment and evidence based falls prevention programs
Module 6: Dementia, delirium and depression
Understand what is dementia, delirium and depression with some tools to measure the three components
Describe risk factors, differential diagnosis and evidence based treatment
Module 7: Strengthening principles
Be Able to understand concepts of strengthening exercise and parameters in addition to importance of Exercise Specificity.
Strengthening principles presentation
Evidence based exercises for older adults with applying the physical stress theory within the context of an exercise prescription for aging adults.
