I’m passionate about the use of integrated manual skills & movement as a therapy and beyond" ​ Fatma get Qualified from Cairo University in 2008 with Bsc in Physiotherapy, since then she started her fruitful journey with Primephysio Training UK. She has had the opportunity to shadow many big figures international tutors during the period between 2008 and 2014. 6 international McKenzie tutors, Mulligan, Bobath, Cyriax and manual therapy tutors during teaching activities in Egypt, Dubai & Oman under the umbrella of Primephysio Training UK, as a branch manager she was the main host and assistant tutor. Shadowing that broad range of expertise was a great privilege and was influential in shaping her clinical and teaching skills. Following a lengthy and comprehensive training program She got her teaching certification from Primephysio Training UK which gave her the required skills and training to start her teaching career. She started teaching short workshops since 2012 following completing her McKenzie certification with McKenzie institute international, this was followed by many teaching activities all related to the field of Orthopaedic Manual Therapy. A new chapter in her career started last year in January when she joined the board member of the Orthopedic Manual Therapy Academy. She was part of the curriculum development team where she shaped a teaching program that maps to the world highest standards of Orthoapedic Manual Therapy. In 2013 she successfully completed a certificate in Pilates and qualified as Pilates instructor by STOTT Pilates Canada which gave her a new skills and range of knowledge that has been well integrated into her teaching of manual therapy. ​ After more than 10 years of experience working with a wide variety of patients in private practice as a therapist and Pilates instructor, Fatma discovered Kinetic Control. She found that its rigorous clinical framework helped her to use movement assessment and retraining in her treatment, alongside the integration of Pilates, as a long term effective and high standard management, rehabilitation and patient care strategy. Joining Comera Movement sciences as a Kinetic Control tutor in 2019.

Pilates: Is It an Alternative to Physical Therapy?

I would say, no, but it is a great part of rehabilitation and should be a skill that every physiotherapist should gain & apply.

So, why is Pilates an effective rehabilitation tool?

First, let me introduce myself, and how I started my journey as a Pilates Instructor I am Fatma Elbakry. I graduated as a Physiotherapist in 2008. Back in 2010 I had a severe LBP attack that with some Mechanical diagnosis & therapy and some mobilization strategies always get relieved but every time I went to the gym, I had a flare-up. Then, I decided to try other forms of exercises (yoga, spinning classes and others), till I joined a Mat Pilates class, and it was my first time ever in 2 months that I felt no pain during exercises, even had total relieve from my back pain after practicing Pilates for 2 weeks. That was the moment I decided to join Merrithew Canada courses to become a Stott Mat Pilates Instructor. After more than 10 years of experience working with a wide variety of patients in private practice as a manual and kinetic control therapist and Pilates instructor, I found the ultimate package of management, helping my patients move on day 1, as early mobility is important in decreasing the convalescent period, especially following a musculoskeletal injury. It is also a long-term effective and high standard rehabilitation strategy. Although originated by Joseph Pilates back in the late 19th century, Pilates gained gradual popularity as a mainstream rehabilitation tool to treat both acute and chronic injuries, providing a whole-body approach to patient care. Since the early 2000s, there has been a growing body of evidence on the relationship between Pilates intervention and patient recovery. Pilates or as used to be called Contrology uses a combination of approximately 50 simple, repetitive exercises to create muscular fusion and train the different stabilizer and mobilize group in different modes (eccentric, concentric & isometric) providing the therapist with a whole body balanced movement between stability (motor control) and mobility, forming a link between your musculoskeletal and nervous systems as mind-body exercise.

Some other unique features related to Pilates that will be introduced and practiced during the course:

 
  • Each exercise is initiated by stabilizing the core musculature, which includes the abdominal, gluteal, and scapular, and then proceeds through a controlled range of motion.

  • A Flexible Form of Rehab is used to either increase muscle strength and endurance, muscular and fascial flexibility and improve posture and balance.

  • It’s a whole-body exercise that promotes agility, and strength through using the body weight as the main resistance that is used throughout the series of Pilates mat exercises.

  • The additional psychological element of Pilates is evident in the additional focus on breathing and concentration during the execution of these exercises. "Part of its success is indeed based on the approach to the principles of Pilates” Joseph Pilates- THE 6 PILATES PRINCIPLES.

  • Develop the ability to assess proper form for each exercise and how to correct improper execution.

  • Effective communication and observational skills for movement cueing.

  • How to integrate resistance equipment to support and intensify exercises.

  • Workout composition and exercise layering related to effective program designs.

  • Practice the integration of the Pilates-based program into various clinical scenarios.
